Now that I know xorg-edit exists, I created a new tutorial on how to install it. It’s not rocket science, but sometimes people need screenshots for reassurance.

Many thanks, I did not know of xorg-edit.
I’ll try it out, even if I’ve always preferred CLI over GUI.

Well I didn’t know of xorg-edit until this week either!

Apparently it’s been around for a while, though…

    Thanks

Thanks for taking the time to put together the tutorials. It has saved me countless time and headaches.

    You’re welcome, NyNoah.

    Hi ubuntucat,

Love the tutorials, thanks for them. I’m a new Linux/Ubuntu adoptee (1 week and counting), and it would be great to have a tutorial about where program files are located. I’m used to ‘Program Files’ in Windows being where all my apps are installed (or I get asked where to put them), but Ubuntu just seems to stuff them somewhere. Surely there must be some logic to how it all works?

This has nothing to do with Xorg-edit, sorry - couldn’t find any other way of sending the suggestion - but I’m off to try it now.

Such a tutorial has already been written:
I installed it, but where did my program go?

Thanks for your site. Convenient cluster of “beginner’s info”. The following may be useful to add. I downloaded the Nvidia driver + tried the xorg-edit, but it didn’t seem to work. I couldn’t get resolution above 1024×768.

After searching / trial & error, this finally worked -
    sudo nvidia-settings
    Got the tip from http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=525923

It may help someone else. However, this is only for Nvidia videocard, so I’m not sure about other cards.

Yes, this worked. Much better than a complete reconfigure for your keyboard, mouse, and etc. when all you want is to change the screen.

I can also see that it would be easy to trash your system. Use with care.
